T-REX Project samenwerking

Op dit moment wordt slechts 2% van het textiel na gebruik in de EU gerecycled. De noodzaak om het groeiende probleem van textielafval in Europa aan te pakken was de belangrijkste inspiratie voor Race Against Waste om de textiel races te lanceren. De uitdaging waar we voor staan om dit probleem aan te pakken is natuurlijk groter dan één organisatie, dus we zijn altijd op zoek naar gelijkgestemde organisaties om mee samen te werken.

We zijn verheugd om een nieuwe samenwerking aan te kondigen met het door de EU gefinancierde T-REX Project (Textile Recycling Excellence), dat ook werkt aan het oplossen van de uitdagingen rond het inzamelen, sorteren en recyclen van afgedankt textiel. Het T-REX Project is een samenwerking tussen 13 internationale organisaties uit de hele textielwaardeketen samen met onderzoeksinstituten om een geharmoniseerde EU-blauwdruk te creëren voor het sorteren en recyclen van huishoudelijk textielafval.

Over een periode van drie jaar werkt het T-REX Project aan het inzamelen en sorteren van huishoudelijk textielafval en demonstreert het het volledige recyclingproces van drie materiaalstromen, waaronder polyester, polyamide 6 en cellulosevezels uit textielafval die tot nieuwe kledingstukken zullen worden ontwikkeld. In de loop van het project wil het consortium uiteindelijk systemische oplossingen ontwikkelen voor het probleem van textielafval en beoordelen hoe burgers in staat kunnen worden gesteld om actief bij te dragen aan de verandering.

Dat brengt ons bij onze gezamenlijke samenwerking. In de maanden september en oktober werken Race Against Waste en het T-REX Project samen aan de Textiel Race in de gemeente Westland. De race bestaat uit 7 teams (van 5 scholen) die de strijd met elkaar aangaan om zoveel mogelijk gebruikt textiel in te zamelen dat zo een tweede leven kan krijgen of gerecycled kan worden. Daarnaast worden de kinderen uitgedaagd om extra opdrachten uit te voeren waarbij ze ervaring opdoen met alle stappen van de R-ladder voor circulariteit. Ze kunnen bijvoorbeeld gratis kleding op Marktplaats aanbieden of een kledingruil organiseren ('Hergebruik' stap). Of kledingstukken en knuffels gaan repareren ('Repareren' stap). T-REX Project collaboration

Today, only 2% of post-consumer textiles in the EU is being diverted to fibre-to-fibre recycling. The need to address the mounting issue of textile waste in Europe was the main inspiration for Race Against Waste launching its textiles races. The challenge we face to address this problem is of course bigger than any one organisation so we are always looking for like minded organisations to team up with.

We are excited to announce a new collaboration with the EU-funded T-REX (Textile Recycling Excellence) Project which is also working to help solve the challenges around collecting, sorting and recycling end of life textiles. The T-REX Project brings together 13 major players from across the textile value chain along with research institutes to create a harmonised EU blueprint for closed loop sorting, and recycling of household textile waste.

Across a three-year period, the T-REX Project is working to collect and sort household textile waste and demonstrate the full recycling process of three material streams including  polyester, polyamide 6, and cellulosic fibres from textile waste which will be developed into new garments. During the course of the project the consortium ultimately  aims  to develop systemic solutions to the problem of textile waste and assess how citizens can be empowered to actively contribute to the change.

Which brings us to our joint collaboration. Across the months of September and October, Race Against Waste and the T-REX Project are teaming up to run a Textile Race in Westland in the Netherlands. The race will include 7  teams (from 5 schools) who will compete to collect as much end-of-use textiles as possible to re-enter the textiles stream for recycling. In addition, the children are encouraged to carry out extra assignments in which they gain experience with all steps of the R-ladder for circularity; for example, with a clothing swap (‘Re-use’ step) of a and clothing repair session (‘Repair’ step) they can gain extra points. To learn more about the race please contact us at info@raceagainstwaste.org
